Apostille or legalization

High school diplomas obtained outside Poland - with the exception of the International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate diplomas - must be endorsed with an apostille or legalized in order to be recognized on Polish territory.

If the document was issued in a country that is a party to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 (Journal of Laws of 2005 No. 112, item 938), it is necessary to obtain an apostille. The institutions responsible for issuing this document vary from country to country - their list is available [here].

Note that the apostille is issued in a foreign language and - if the documents are submitted for studies conducted in Polish - its translation into Polish is required.

In a situation where the country of issuance of the document has not acceded to the Hague Convention, a legalization procedure must be carried out. This process also confirms the authenticity of the document and usually takes place in a government institution of the country - most often in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Education. After obtaining the appropriate certification, the document should then be legalized at a Polish consulate.

Nostrification

Some of the certificates are recognized in Poland by law and do not require additional procedures for study. This applies to certificates issued in EU, OECD and EFTA member states IB (International Baccalaureate) diploma issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, EB (European Baccalaureate) issued by the European Schools in accordance with the Convention on the Statute of the European Schools and those with which Poland has international agreements on the recognition of education (Ukraine - certificate of full secondary education and China - gaozhong).

For other countries, information from the director of NAWA is required (the possibility to apply will be from July 1, 2025) or the decision of the school superintendent.

Those who enroll after July 1, 2025, the information of the NAWA director or the decision of the Superintendent of Education must provide at the stage of enrollment (by September 30). Providing the document at a later date will not be possible.

If you have submitted an application to the Board of Education by June 30, 2025, and receive a decision on the basis of the application to recognize the certificate, you do not need to additionally obtain the NAWA director's information.
